How to choose the best headlights

Three decisions, in this order: the housing (projector or reflector), the light source (halogen, HID or LED), and whether the assembly is a straight replacement or a custom unit that changes the look of the front end.

Look into the housing with the light off. A mirrored bowl around the bulb is a reflector. A small glass lens in front of a cup is a projector — that is what controls the cut-off line, and why HID and LED conversions belong in one.

The ultimate headlights guide

Colour temperature is a preference up to a point. Usable light output peaks around 4300-5000K; past 6000K you trade road visibility for a blue tint that gets worse in rain and fog.

Beam pattern matters more than raw lumens. A 3000-lumen bulb in the wrong housing puts light in the trees and in the eyes of oncoming drivers, while a well-aimed 1500-lumen unit lights the road properly.

Headlights for every US make and model year

Modern composite headlights are incorporated into the design of the body, so an improved styling and aerodynamics are a large part of what they do. They also carry more of the vehicle's identity than any other part: swap the assembly and the whole front end reads differently. That is why the catalog is organised by what the part has to achieve — a factory-correct replacement, a genuine OEM unit, or a custom assembly with halo rings, switchback strips or a sequential indicator.

Alongside complete assemblies we list the parts that are usually quoted as assembly-only elsewhere: retaining rings, housings, lenses, mounting kits, adjustment kits, adjustment rings, adjustment springs, adjustment screws and more. Sealed beam applications are catalogued by opening size rather than by vehicle, so a 1948 pickup and a 1972 coupe that share a 7" round opening share the same shelf.

Ordered a projector set for an '06 Super Duty. They asked for the VIN before shipping and caught that I had the DRL harness variant. Plugged straight in — no splicing, no error codes.

They actually sell the small parts

We buy assemblies weekly for the shop. What keeps us here is that components are listed separately — three adjustment screws and a retaining ring instead of a whole housing.

I asked for 8000K and they talked me down to 5000K for a reflector housing, with the reason why. Rain visibility is noticeably better than my last set.

Questions about headlights

How do I know which headlight fits my vehicle?
Year, make, model and trim gets you most of the way. The last step is the variant — the same model year often shipped halogen reflector, HID projector and LED versions with different connectors and mounting tabs. Send the VIN and we confirm it against the build sheet before anything leaves the shelf.
Can I drop LED bulbs into a halogen housing?
Usually not well. A halogen reflector is shaped around a filament in a precise spot. An LED emitter sitting even slightly off throws light where the reflector was never designed to send it — glare for oncoming traffic, less usable road. For LED output in an older housing a retrofit projector kit is the correct route.
What is the difference between Replacement and OEM?
OEM parts come from the vehicle manufacturer's own supplier in manufacturer packaging. Replacement units are aftermarket parts built to the same form and function, often CAPA-certified, at a lower price. Both bolt in the same way.
Are custom headlights street legal?
The assembly has to carry a DOT/SAE marking to be legal on public roads in the US, and some states add rules on lens tint and accent colour. Every collection page states its marking; show or off-road-only items say so plainly.
Do you sell just the lens or housing?
